- MACCOMM Conference Rules - Last modified 7 Nov '95
This is a Macintosh-related on-line communications discussion and support
conference. Topical discussion includes (1) general issues dealing with
telecommunications with, through, or from the Macintosh line of computers;
(2) Mac compression/archiving and encoding software and schemes; (3) Mac-
related BBS'es and on-line services; (4) wide area networks such as
Fidonet and the Internet, and related software such as QWK mail readers,
Fidonet 'node' and 'point' software, Internet setups and clients of any
kind, etc. (5) This echo is also a distribution channel for BinHexed 'face
icons' for Macintosh mail readers such as Alice and COUNTERPoint.
This conference will be administered mainly by netmail. Complaints and
suggestions are to be sent by NETMAIL to the moderator, who will then act
as appropriate. (You can also use Internet e-mail if you like.) If
necessary, public announcements may be made by the moderator to control
outbursts of inappropriate postings and to discourage others from
participating in the thread.
There should be no need for rules, but the following are guidelines and
will be enforced at the moderator's discretion:
1. Stay on topic (as described in the first paragraph).
1a. Do not correct a poster's behaviour in the echo; it's off-topic, and
we don't want people overloaded with embarassing public corrections.
Twits should especially NOT be replied to in the echo; send me a
complaint in netmail or e-mail instead. See also rules 5 and 5a.
2. Whenever you reply to a message, use your message editor's quoting
facility to "quote" the pertinent parts of the message you're replying
to. This will keep your message understandable for people who start
reading in the middle of a thread, or when your reply floats in at a
given system before the original message (that does happen sometimes).
Also, Fido runs slowly and people forget fast. Get the hint? Thanks.
2a. Don't quote entire messages (see Rule 3).
2b. If you *really* can't figure out how to quote, write a brief recap of
the original message instead.
3. Remember, most of us are paying to bring this conference into our
system. Don't consume more bandwidth than is necessary for your post.
For example, no big fancy sign-offs with graphics, logos etc.
4. In order to ensure compatibility with all computer systems, don't
use characters that do not belong to the standard ASCII set (32-127).
That is, no accented letters, no "curly quotes", and no characters that
require the Option key to be pressed.
5. Be polite, or take it to netmail.
5a. Do not be annoying, nor too easily annoyed.
6. Face icons in BinHex text format for Alice, Copernicus and CounterPoint
will be allowed on an infrequent basis (in other words, don't clutter
the conference with them).
6a. PGP keys and encrypted messages may _not_ be posted in the MACCOMM echo
under any circumstances. (A good PGP key distribution channel is the
Fidonet PKEY_DROP echo conference.)
6b. Messages may _not_ have a PGP signature attached, unless the message
meets all of the following five conditions:
I. The author has not posted a PGP signed message in MACCOMM in
the latest two weeks.
II. The message must be addressed to All.
III. The message must be an announcement which is of interest to a
large part of the MACCOMM participants.
IV. The message must include a section on where and how to obtain a
reliable copy of the author's PGP public key, which is required
for verifying the signature.
V. The message text must be wrapped to lines of max. 78 characters
_before_ it is signed. Each line must end with a hard return.
This is to prevent problems with BBS mail packers that wrap
unwrapped messages themselves, resulting in a bad signature.
7. Alias identities, handles, or pseudonyms are not allowed in this
conference. If the system from which you are posting allows such, ask
your sysop to use the appropriate utility to ensure that your real name
appears on all posts originating from the system in this conference.
8. In all other aspects FidoNet policy and Zone 1 backbone operating
procedures prevail. It is the responsibility of each node to be familiar
with these policies.
End of MACCOMM Conference Rules. Thanks for reading them. Keep on posting! ;)
